Cooperativa Falset Marça is the result of the merger of the cooperatives of Marça and Falset, two neighbouring towns separated by only 3 kilometres, in the southern part of the Priorat region. The production of quality wines and extra virgin olive oil is our main activity.
We are more than just a company and we are more than a century-old cooperative. The 320 members are the growers and, at the same time, are the owners of the cooperative, its "shareholders". We take care of the vineyards and olive trees until their fruits reach the winery and the mill to be turned into wine and olive oil.
More than a hundred years ago, the agricultural cooperatives of Falset and Marça, started a project that is still very alive.
A lot of things have changed in a hundred years, but we are up to date through innovation. This continued innovation together with the respect to tradition make us proudly different.
Despite the decades, the basic objective of our cooperative has been the same for a century: "to strive for the development and improvement of our agricultural products", according to the first statutes.
It's that simple: doing things right remains our main goal.
The town of Marça sees the birth of its first trade union.
In Falset, the foundation of the cooperative must be placed five years later
An important year: the two local cooperatives decided to work together and merged.
Producers of 900,000 bottles of wine a year, the wines and extra virgin olive oil are known in more than 30 countries. The current figures have little to do with the origins, at the beginning of the 20th century.
In terms of elaboration we are one of the most recognized historic wineries in the DO Montsant, respected for its wines and their balanced value for money.
The winery building, sited in Falset, is one of the Cathedrals of Wine designed by architect Cesar Martinell, disciple of Antoni Gaudi. It was finished on 1919, into the Modernism style, and it is a reference of the architectural heritage of rural Catalonia.
From the great structural elements to the small details, the conception of this imposing building combines the beauty of the forms with the functionality for which it was created.
The states are family run by the members of the Cooperative. Which with the professional advice of the team at the winery, they get the best of their vineyards and olive trees.
The states are sited in the municipalities of Falset and Marça, in the south part of the Priorat region. It is an area between 200 and 500 m of altitude, surrounded in the south-east by small mountains that allow the Mediterranean breeze to get in at the end of the day.
It is also very rich in soils. In our states you can find limestone, clay, sand, granite and even slate (aka "llicorella").
This mix of soils, altitudes and microclimates allows us to choose the best grapes for each wine every vintage.
The varieties planted are mainly Red Grenache and Carignan, but we have also some Ull de llebre (aka Tempranillo), Syrah, Cabernet sauvignon and Merlot. Among them there are some vines of the white varieties White Grenache and Macabeo.
The age of the vineyards run from a few very old ones (more than 90 years) to the "newest" planted 20 years ago. The majority of them are between 60 and 30 years old.
The crops of vines are usually accompanied by olive trees, hazelnut and almond trees.
Etim Extra Virgin olive Oil is produced at the mill sited in Marça, called Moli de la Mola. Here we have updated infrastructures which allow us to elaborate our high quality EVOO following the standards of DOP Siurana appellation.
The olives are picked during the day and taken on the same day to the mill, where any remaining leaves or twigs are removed.
Then they are put through a crusher mill to obtain a paste that is mixed and finally centrifuged to obtain the olive juice, all it is made under cold temperatures.
Virgin Olive Oil is the natural juice extracted by crushing the olives and in contrast of other vegetable oils no chemicals are used to obtain it.
